about

Professional summary

Cloud solutions architect and DevOps lead with 20 years in IT and the last decade in AWS. I am currently the sole architect and technical authority for a Sony-acquired e-sports platform, where I designed and built the entire AWS estate behind 300k+ monthly active users and 40k+ tournaments a month, and lead a team of five engineers. My work runs from architecture and migration strategy down to the CDK, Terraform and pipelines that make it real — serverless and microservices design, zero-downtime database and streaming migrations, multi-account governance, and the FinOps discipline that has taken six figures out of cloud and licensing bills. I have led migrations at scale before: 3,000+ workloads at Virgin Australia and a 100+ server middleware estate at BBC Capita. I hold 12 AWS certifications, including Solutions Architect Professional and DevOps Engineer Professional, and I am an AWS Community Builder.

experience

Professional experience

Two decades across cloud architecture, DevOps and middleware leadership in Australia, the UK, France and India.

  1. Nov 2022 – Present

    Lead Cloud & DevOps Engineer

    Sony Interactive Entertainment (Repeat.gg)Brisbane, Australia

Sole architect and technical authority for every AWS and DevOps decision at Repeat.gg, an Australian e-sports startup acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2022 — a platform serving 300k+ monthly active users and 40k+ tournaments a month.

    • Architected and built the entire high-traffic AWS estate from scratch — EC2 Auto Scaling, ECS/Fargate, Managed Kafka, Amazon MQ, Lambda and API Gateway — sized for 24×7 availability and real-time result processing.
    • Own architecture governance for the platform: run POCs and evaluations of new AWS services and third-party products, make the build-versus-buy calls, and set the patterns the team builds to.
    • Executed zero-downtime migrations — DocumentDB → MongoDB Atlas and self-managed Kafka → Confluent Cloud — using dual-run replication, staged cutovers and tested rollback paths.
    • Dockerised and migrated 50+ microservices from EC2 to ECS/Fargate with no downtime, and standardised CI/CD across 100+ repositories with Bitbucket Pipelines and AWS CDK in TypeScript, applying blue-green deployments.
    • Designed the observability strategy — logs, metrics and alerting on Elasticsearch — and built ETL pipelines from DocumentDB and MySQL into S3 and Snowflake for analytics and reporting.
    • Built web-based developer portals surfacing application metrics and self-service infrastructure requests, reducing day-to-day dependency on the DevOps team.
    • Migrated a Sony application (Next.js frontend, Drupal CMS, MySQL) onto the platform — the proof point that Repeat's infrastructure could take over and maintain Sony workloads.
    • Maintain EC2 configuration across environments with Ansible, and deploy React Native / Expo mobile apps to the Apple App Store and Google Play.
    • Lead and mentor a team of 5 DevOps engineers, act as single point of contact for all cloud and DevOps issues, and document implementations and standards into the team knowledge base.
  2. Sep 2019 – Oct 2022

    Senior Cloud & DevOps Engineer

    Origin EnergyBrisbane, Australia

Key member of the Digital Platform & Architecture team within Origin Integrated Gas, designing and architecting cloud solutions across 9 product squads.

    • Architected and implemented the migration of a complex legacy application to serverless and microservices on AWS, saving Origin $200k+ a year in licensing and support costs.
    • Designed and built “Digital Monitor” — a React dashboard consolidating CloudWatch alarms across 40+ AWS accounts and alerting the owning squad — enabling proactive issue detection and avoiding outage costs.
    • Established Azure DevOps CI/CD patterns across multiple products, taking daily pipeline executions from tens to hundreds and increasing delivery velocity across squads.
    • Delivered a fully functional serverless backend for a React application in two weeks, establishing business confidence in the platform team's capability.
    • Implemented a centralised tagging solution across 40+ AWS accounts, giving the finance team accurate business-unit cost attribution.
    • Reported cloud spend monthly with costed optimisation recommendations, and reviewed SEMP submissions ahead of product releases.
  3. Mar 2019 – Sep 2019

    Senior Cloud Engineer

    Virgin AustraliaBrisbane, Australia

Joined Virgin Australia's Cloud Practice team to accelerate their cloud migration programme, making significant impact on VA's cloud landscape in a short tenure.

    • Key engineer on a programme migrating 3,000+ workloads from on-premises to AWS; redesigned legacy on-prem applications into serverless and microservices architectures.
    • Built internal tools to remove manual effort — AWS Cloud Inventory (keyword search across resources in every AWS account), Megaport Dashboard (bandwidth usage across all Direct Connect connections), SSM Params CLI and a Backup CLI.
    • Developed and maintained CI/CD patterns and pipelines with Ansible, Terraform, CloudFormation, Packer and Makefiles, and built custom Docker image pipelines for mission-critical applications.
    • Ran POCs on cloud and third-party solutions with documented proposals setting out the business value of each, plus workshops and demos for developers, support teams and management.
  4. Jan 2017 – Mar 2019

    Cloud Engineer

DXC Technology — ANZ AWS PracticeAustralia

Moved from DXC UK to the Australia and New Zealand AWS Practice, supporting multiple private and government clients through their cloud adoption journeys.

    • Identified the opportunity to centralise multi-account management and built an application to run daily tasks and checks across all client AWS accounts, cutting manual effort by at least 1.5 FTEs.
    • Implemented the migration of SAP workloads onto AWS.
    • Acted as client Account Manager — presenting solutions to management and technical teams, and producing documentation pitched at both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Developed Lambda-based automation for patching, backups and reporting, and maintained CloudFormation templates for rapid deployment into client accounts.
    • Monitored client workloads continuously and delivered cost and performance optimisation recommendations; organised monthly “Tech Talks” demonstrating new AWS services and features.
